Yana Panfilova

Yana is 22 years old, she is Ukrainian and has a bachelor’s degree in social work (Academy of Labor, Social Relations and Tourism). She is the Chair of the Board of the “Teenergizer”, an Association for Adolescents and Youth, since 2015. She has been working in the field of support and protection of the rights of vulnerable adolescents for 7 years in the region of Eastern Europe and Central Asia, is the author of the report “Main barriers to adolescent HIV testing in Ukraine, Russia and Georgia.”

Yana was born with HIV. When she was 10, she learned about her HIV status. At the age of 13, she spoke openly at the International Conference on Children and HIV on behalf of adolescents living with HIV in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. In addition, as a result of an open speech on her HIV status in Moldova and advocacy in June 2013, the Ministry of Health introduced disability benefits for all HIV+ children.

Also, as a result of an open speech at an extended meeting of the Coordinating Committee for HIV Prevention in the Sverdlovsk region in Russia in December 2013 and other advocacy activities, it was decided that government agencies should pay special attention to the youth living with HIV. She spoke about HIV+ adolescents from the EECA region at the 2016 UN General Assembly HIV/AIDS Summit, and was a panelist at the 22-nd International AIDS Conference in Amsterdam in 2018.

During her session “Advocacy and mobilization of adolescents and youth in Ukraine” Yana will talk about current issues among adolescents and youth, as well as what are the ways to solve them at the state level. The session will begin on September 17 at 16.25.

Kateryna is a student of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Faculty of Psychology. For 3 years in a row, she has been organizing her own social and educational projects aimed at protecting and supporting HIV-positive adolescents throughout Ukraine and the CIS countries, as well as developing projects related to the introduction of the aspect of sex education in Ukrainian society. She has experience of working in the team of the international charity organization “Teenergizer”, where she was an online consultant for HIV-positive youth, author of psychological articles and co-organizer of events such as: “VYcherinka 2018” and “PiknyVIChok 2019”.

Kateryna’s credo “Live fully, not exist!”. So she is looking forward to meeting you!

The session “Sexual Education of Youth in Ukraine and the World” will focus on the reproductive health of young people, you can share your views on preventive measures to improve the epidemiological situation of the HIV/AIDS epidemic not only in Ukraine but also worldwide. Kateryna will also talk about the emotions and self-perceptions of adolescents living with HIV-positive status. She also compares Ukraine’s experience in counteracting the spread of the HIV/AIDS epidemic with the successful experience of the Scandinavian countries. And to complement the session, she will discuss the digital innovations brought by the quarantine into our daily routines, as one of the methods of prevention and reducing the risk of HIV infection.

The problem is that often teenagers know almost nothing about their rights and therefore do not understand when their rights are violated. Because of this, they do not seek help. The experience of our work proves that it is not enough just to ask “Are your rights being violated?”. This session will help you learn how every adult can help teenagers fully use and fulfill their rights. During the session, all participants will receive a simple and effective tool for identifying violations of adolescents’ rights and advice on how to respond effectively to such violations.

Senior social worker of the project “Bridging the Gaps: Health and Rights for Key Populations”, coordinator of the project “Underaged, overlooked: Improving access to integrated HIV services for adolescents most at risk in Ukraine”. Field of activity: provision of services for adolescents who use drugs. Experience of working with adolescents: 6 years in a correctional colony for minors and 3 years in the Day Care Center “Compass” of the CO “Kharkiv Charitable Foundation “Blago”.

– Andriy will conduct a preventive online quest “Drugs? Not my thing!” Participants will unite in six teams. Each team will earn points during the thematic stations. During the quest, participants will learn in an exciting way about the harms of drug use, safer behavior, methods of contraception, tolerance towards people living with HIV and human rights. Andriy will prove once again that prevention can be not only useful but also interesting.
